Salts on Drive Head Road Salts In Speaker Drive Heads
Year after year we get returned speaker drive heads which have been destroyed.
Below is a picture of the inside of a speaker drive head showing the distinct white road salt deposits which cause the speaker heads to blow. Road salt is put on roads with grit in the winter to stop icing. These salts remain on the road all year round. When it rains the salts go into solution with the rainwater. If the speaker trumpet is mounted horizontally under the van the wheel spray gets into the drive head. When the water dries out it leaves the salt deposit on the coil and magnet. The salt glues the coil to the magnet which is then destroyed next time you use your chimes!
Moral of the story - mount your speaker trumpet pointing downwards and the drive head inside the van.
This will save you money on replacing speaker heads year after year!
Don't bother covering the head with a plastic bag - it doesn't work! Neither does stuffing the end of the trumpet with foam - it will just distort the sound!
